    Abstract
    A glass composition that belonging to a glass series with none of lead component simultaneously containing a rare earth oxide and fluorine, has a shielding capacity comparable to lead glass, being high in surface hardness and extremely high in transparency within visible region. The glass composition is one containing, by mass% on oxide basis, 1 to 85% Ln2O3 (Ln is at least one member selected from the group consisting of La, Y, Gd, Tb, Dy, Yb and Lu) and 0.1 to 20% fluorine and exhibiting a lead equivalent of 0.03 mmPb/mm or higher to 150 kV X-rays. Further, by incorporating SiO2 and/or B2O3 and/or GeO2 and/or P2O5 in a total amount of 10 to 70%, there can be obtained a glass composition that is stable with respect to devitrification, having high surface hardness, and that excels in transparency and radiation ray shielding capacity.
