    Apr 29, 2011 - what is the difference between hda and sda. because i only have two paritions and not more.. All the modern kernels see drives as sdx rather than hdx, the x representing the drive number. sda1 sda2 sda3 sda5 would be partitions for the the first drive, which is sda.

    I am dual booting Arch with Gentoo, so my /boot layout is a little different. ... I really don't want to reference my disks via sda* as it just makes no sense. ...     You just have to type /dev/sda instead of /dev/hda. pjv. generally as mentioned, the only difference between a hda and sda is the type of hard disk you have on your box (ide or scsi). while the number following it like hda1 is the partition. Hope you like linux, though it is not commonly used for desktop, it's the best for servers.
