Minchin and his wife Sarah, whom he married in 2001 and with whom he has a daughter and a son, returned to Australia from Los Angeles in December 2017. They currently live in Sydney.

He does do that: a virtuosic piano player, the man knows how to entertain a crowd - older songs like "Darkside" and "You Grew On Me" are cleverly written and riotously funny, the former even allowing for an extended solo in which Minchin broke down how he constructed the solo.

Timmy the Dog was my band before I moved to Melbourne. It was made up of me on piano and vocals, my brother, Dan Minchin on guitar, Josh Jones on bass and the great Gordon Ryder on drums. Dan and Josh also sang loads. Timmy the Dog's one and only album “sit“ was recorded in my house in Subiaco, Perth by Gavin Tempany.
