    Jan 31, 2012 - I had this same question working on a 3D interface today, and came to the conclusion that "vertical" (y axis), "lateral" (x axis), and "horizontal" (z axis) fit reasonably well. Vertical means "being in a position or direction perpendicular to the plane of the horizon; upright; plumb."
