Did you know that a wolf’s balls aka testicles disappear in late spring and the summer only to reappear in the autumn? Male wolves are seasonal breeders, which means their reproductive system literally grows or shrinks with the seasons. As autumn approaches and daylight shortens, hormone levels rise — especially testosterone. This triggers the testicles to enlarge and begin producing sperm in preparation for the winter breeding season. By January and February, when wolves usually mate, those testicles are at their largest and fully functional. But once the breeding season is over - Nature hits the off switch. Hormone levels drop, sperm production stops, and the testicles shrink dramatically — sometimes by more than half. By summer they can be so small and tucked into the fur that they’re almost invisible, which is why people often think they’ve completely disappeared. Nothing is wrong with the wolf.
