Use the Index > Reset Index page to delete the search index and reset the crawl queues.

The ability to delete the index and reset the crawl queues is most useful during the initial configuration and testing of the search appliance. Google strongly recommends that you do not reset the index on a production search appliance because serving is interrupted until the index is rebuilt. Recrawling your content and rebuilding the index can take hours to days, depending on the amount of content.

When the index is deleted, all search result serving stops. Cached content is also deleted from the search appliance.

When the crawl queues are reset, crawling stops. Resetting the index does not affect crawl patterns and most entries on the Admin Console. However, resetting the index does remove feeds entered on the Content Sources > Feeds page. After you reset the index, you must set up feeds on the Content Sources > Feeds page again.

Before the search appliance is able to resume serving, the content must be recrawled and the index rebuilt.

After you delete the index, the search appliance is unavailable for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. When the search appliance becomes available, it behaves differently depending on how the crawl mode is configured.

• If the search appliance is in continuous crawl mode, the crawl resumes almost immediately after the search appliance becomes available.
• If the search appliance is in scheduled crawl mode, the crawl resumes at the time scheduled.

Before Starting this Task

Before you reset the index, decide whether to change any settings that affect the crawl or other aspects of the search appliance. If you plan to make any changes, and the search appliance is in continuous crawl mode, pause the crawl before resetting the index.

To pause the crawl:

1. Cilck Content Sources > Diagnostics > Crawl Status.
2. Click the Pause Crawl button.

Resetting the Index

To reset the index:

1. Click Index > Reset Index.
2. Click Reset Index. The search appliance is unavailable for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

Subsequent Tasks

If you paused the crawl before resetting the index, make any changes you need in the system settings, then navigate to Content Sources > Diagnostics > Crawl Status and click Resume Crawl.

Ensure that you re-enable any feeds on the Content Sources > Feeds page.
