Below, we disclose information about the requests for user information that we receive from U.S. authorities:
The table below provides a range of how many requests we received under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) every six months since January 2009, as well as a range of how many users or accounts were affected by any given request during each six month period. The ranges are broken down by legal requests for non-content information — the same kind of information that can be requested under a criminal subpoena or criminal order under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act — and legal requests for private content — the same kind of information that can be requested under a criminal search warrant or wiretap order.
Any request received in one reporting period that extends beyond that period is included in each reporting period where it remains in effect. Similarly, each account specified in that request is included in each additional reporting period. For example, a surveillance request served in the first half of a year that remains effective until sometime in the second half would be included in ranges for both reporting periods that year.
For more information about FISA requests, please refer to our FAQ. These ranges are separate from the National Security Letters reported below and excluded from the total sum of user data requests that we receive under criminal legal process and report biannually.
