Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 surpass the sales numbers of the Tesla Model 3 in Western Europe

German automobile manufacturers are slowly but surely catching up to their big American rival in the market of all-electric cars. We just recently reported on BMW's plans to introduce an all-electric BMW i7 version of its flagship four-door sedan, the BMW 7 Series, in 2022. But the Wolfsburg-based Volkswagen corporation can also be very happy with the success of its more affordable electric vehicles VW ID.3 and VW ID.4.

According to an article by a German business magazine, in the first eight months of 2021 Volkswagen was able to sell 76,415 combined units of the VW ID.3 and VW ID.4 in Western Europe. Volkswagen sold about 44,000 ID.3 EVs and 33,000 units of the ID.4 SUV. These two closely related electric cars have together surpassed the sales numbers of the Tesla Model 3, which was newly registered 75,000 times over the same period of time. In addition to that, Volkswagen was also able to distribute 24,000 units of its ultra compact VW eUP.

Since the Tesla Model S (Hot Wheels collectible from US$49 on Amazon), Model X and Model Y did not make it into the Top 20 of the best selling electric vehicles, Volkswagen has beat its American competitor in terms of sales numbers in the first eight months of 2021. It is likely that the worldwide shortage of microchips and semiconductors equally impacted the sales figures of both companies. Among all countries in Western Europe, Germany has seen the highest sales numbers of newly registered electric vehicles, which came in at a formidable 204,000 EVs during the aforementioned time period.
