Charles F. Haanel (1866-1949) was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He began his business career in St. Louis. He resigned his position in order to start his own company and eventually founded one of the largest conglomerates of his time.

Mr. Haanel put into books the ideas and methods he used to gain his success. Besides the Master Key System, which he wrote in 1917, he also wrote Mental Chemistry and The New Psychology (both available through Kallisti Publishing).

Mr. Haanel died in 1949 and is buried in Bellafontaine Cemetery, St. Louis. Walter B. Stevens described Mr. Haanel as "a man of mature judgement, capable of taking a calm survey of life and correctly valuing its opportunities, its possibilities, its demands and obligations."

This book was originally published before a lot of the “experts” so you will notice some similarities but this book peels back the onion a bit and forces you to get better at the application of things, instead of trying to sell you a course.

If I knew about this book as a kid, I wouldn’t have stayed in poverty so long.

This is a great book, and there’s prompts in the book that are like little homework. If you like that kind of thing it’s a great read. It gives you something to do almost weekly, and then after doing them you come back and read the next

If you are reading this review, it is likely that you are familiar with The Law of Attraction. This is its initial book, written in 1912 by Charles F. Haanel. I am a proponent--a believer. A couple caveats: The book is written in archaic language and style, which can be hard to understand at times. And, that being one, there are other ironies as well. And lastly, my ultimate question remains unanswered. Nevertheless, FIVE STARS. This book is amazing!

The basic premise of this book is that the world of your experience (your outer world) reflects your inner world. In other words--the unseen creates the seen. The world of your senses is dictated by your mind. Mind is what is commonly referred to as "God." Mind is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. Most of what goes on, 90%, happens at the sub-conscious level. So the trick is, the "master key" is--in the language of Freud, to make the unconscious conscious. The Law of Attraction is Freud's, "There are no accidents." Whatever is happening in your life is a direct effect of your mind. You are the cause of all that happens. There are no accidents. This is abrasive to most people.

Consider this: "Every person is the reflection of the thought he has entertained during his lifetime. THIS IS STAMPED ON HIS FACE (my caps), his form, his character, his environment." (p. 116). Difficulties, inharmonies, and obstacles indicate that we are either refusing to give out what we no longer need, or refusing to accept what we require." (p. 120).

I love this, being a writing coach: "... see that the words ... are exact ... put together carefully because accuracy in building words and sentences is the highest form of architecture in civilization and is a passport to success.' (p.123) That is exactly what I tell my students.

Here is the problem there doesn't seem to be a solution to: You only know what you know. Haanel acknowledges this, saying that people (their minds) are products of their environment and are imprinted early with habits, customs, and traditions; and these then govern their behavior and thoughts. So how can a person break out? He says to seek silence and listen - called meditation today. Empty the mind of all the crap that has been deposited by powerful others. Okay, great. But how would you know to do that, if you are not predisposed to question authority and are open and curious? Not everyone is. He say as much: "The average person is entirely innocent of any deep thinking; he accepts the ideas of others, and repeats them ..." (p.185). It's a "Catch-22." There's no way out. (From the novel by Joseph Heller.) Novelists and writers are the most powerful of all people, by the way. That's from Haanel, but I agree. But what if a person is not a reader? Most aren't; and then those that do often read only what they like ... like attracts like--it is law.

So if you are reading this, you already know this. But, to practice it is really hard, let me tell you. To take full and complete responsibility for everything that happens to you is easier said than done. And here is another question I haven't found an answer to - what happens when desire (within and without) conflicts? I want you and you want him and he wants you to be like him and you fold yourself into him and he uses you for his desire and you lose yourself--your I? Am I just to watch? Am I to just be my "whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious, happy self ... and let you self-destruct? Huh? Huh? Huh?

"Fear is the cloud that hides the sun." I am unafraid.

I liked that it had many questions when it came to defining the master key system. It comes with a nice flip through question segment where you can review what has been read. I learned that this book teaches you a out the wonderful and enigmatic counterpart to life's problems. It delivers a constant stream of information that relies on an alternative to worry, fear, and stress. It's like a goal driven cheat sheet that helps your efforts. I recommend it to someone who likes metaphysics and is curious about abstract thinking. Four out of five because its a bit hard to understand and yet I found it readable.

It's amazing how much insight he is able to so eloquently explain in so FEW words. It's like a combination of multiple other law of attraction books and sources, but somehow shorter AND clearer, with more practical instruction. I recommend Abraham Hicks and Neville as well, (as well as many others I'm sure), but this book really helps boil things down to their essential nature and explain them so clearly. You will feel smarter after reading it. I cannot believe it was written in 1910. Advanced for today.

It was originally written as a correspondence course and I highly recommend reading it that way. I have been taking one chapter a night (originally it was supposed to be one chapter a week), and going through the (very short, but very rich) chapters, and doing the exercises therein. It really is more of a home study course than a book, and each short chapter is the lesson. But even though they are short, they are sooo brilliantly insightful. Not only insightful, they will leaving you feeling empowered and amazed at your own abilities.

UPDATE: After reading another review I must ardently disagree and say that no this book is NOT biased towards Christianity. What he often does, however, is consider his audience. He will say things like: "If you are a Christian, think about it this way. If you are scientifically minded, think about this this way. If you are more physically oriented, think of it this way.". He acknowledges that religions throughout the ages have been trying to address this seemingly mysterious power that we are all seeing the effects of (and he proceeds to debunk that it is "mysterious" at all. It is a pure case of cause and effect. And he explains both). You have to keep in mind, that like any good teacher, he is carefully considering his (then) audience, in 1910.

I myself am not Christian at all, nor am I "woo-woo". I am very logically and scientifically oriented. By scientifically, I mean I don't like "magical" thinking, I like actual demonstrations of cause and effect. I appreciate people have have earnestly studied causes and effects and have practical, true information to share. And that is what this book does.

I am also a huge fan of Abraham Hicks, who also explain law of attraction in very NON-magical ways. It's not magic, it's just the very real power of our mind that we have not been taught to fully use.

I found out about this book on Twitter. One of my twitter friends 'tweeted' that it was one of the best books that he's read. In his tweet he posted a link to the amazon page. When I got to it, I was glad to read that the book was back in print.

Now, I realize that the book is floating around on the internet as an ebook but I prefer to have the real thing.

After having read this book, I have to add it to my list of the top 10 books that I've read in my life. I've read many of the classic books like Think and Grow Rich, The Power of Positive Thinking, Law of Success, etc.
And in many ways, I prefer this book.

The closest book that I've read that is similar to this book is Three Magic Words by US Andersen. I really believe that we have greater control over our circumstances than we realize. One of the other reviewers stated that some of the more prominent self-help coaches and gurus don't really believe that you control 100% of your results.

Now, the problem with that thinking is that it defies the laws of the universe. The world we 'see' is the world of effects that have definite 'causes' and those causes originate in the world within. So, it's our job as spiritual beings to focus our thoughts on the things we desire and trust that The Universal Mind will show us the ways and means, in other words, 'the how' of achieving our desires. Once we receive divine guidance on the 'how' then we must take action.

The book provides a lot of practical advice for people in the areas of health, relationships, and business. One particular line in the book that I thought possessed great truth was when he said,

'Difficulties and obstacles will continue to come until we absorb their wisdom and gather from them the essentials of further growth'

This is a book that you need to read slowly. Take your time with it and let your mind absorb the great Truths that are presented by the author.

After you've finished reading this book, you will truly realize that you have no excuses for the results that you are manifesting in your life. And for those of you who are relatively succesful, you too will benefit from this book.
