The Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce formally known as the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes many businesses and industries to our area. We are your voice for issues and actions affecting business and industry. We are working to preserve the free and competitive enterprise system, promote growth and development, and make the Plainfield Shorewood area a better place to live, work, worship, learn and conduct business. Since the merge of the Plainfield & Shorewood Area Chamber back in April of 2021 we have been focused on getting to know our NEW members and continuing to grow. With this merge it is giving our local businesses, members, and organizations in the area more opportunities to Network within and gain support from the local communities. The strengths and successes of this organization come from individuals within our membership who volunteer their talents and expertise to rally forces to meet daily challenges. The work and rewards of the chamber agenda are not limited to the board of directors and office staff. Business representatives and employees can share the goodwill and excitement of the regular and special events sponsored by the chamber. Networking and showcasing your business to fellow members and the public are advantages of membership, as is your participation in events, like our Annual Golf Outing, Cruise Nights, Plainfield Connections, Let It Glow community competition, seminars and workshops, monthly luncheons, and Chamber Network Nights and now Crossroads Fest. The main chamber office is located right in downtown Plainfield and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and we now have a satellite office at the Shorewood Village Hall. hat an exciting time to live, work and play in Plainfield! Plainfield is a growing community of people and businesses with so many opportunities available to us. Recently named one of the top ten “hipsturbias” in America (a term coined by the New York Times) our Village is home to thriving businesses and great recreational options including craft breweries, farm to fork restaurants, live music venues, weekly car shows, axe throwing, archery venues and an increasing use of the DuPage River and its environs for recreation. Will County’s oldest community, the town that eventually became Plainfield was first settled by a Methodist missionary who came to the large Potawatomi village on the DuPage to convert the indigenous people to Christianity. A lumber mill was built along the river and soon Plainfield was providing lumber to that growing community on Lake Michigan earning the moniker: The “Mother of Chicago” as the first frame buildings there were built from Plainfield lumber.

After the devastating tornado of 1990, the sleepy farm town awoke to be the next in the path of suburban development and our population climbed from about 5,000 to a total population of over 44,000 today. Now the home of large international corporations such as Diageo and Logoplaste among others, Plainfield is a mosaic of such large corporations, small businesses and professionals and other small family-owned craft businesses which provide a plethora of options for our residents and visitors. As Mayor, I’ve pledged to respect our history while fully embracing the 21st century and its opportunities. A new wind is blowing, changing the face of Plainfield – a Plainfield proudly inclusive and recognizing our diversity. ello! My name is Clarence “CC” DeBold and I am the newly elected mayor of Shorewood. I am very excited about my new position, and couldn’t be happier to serve the Village I grew up in. The Village of Shorewood is a town of just over 18,000 residents, and we are growing. Shorewood sits along the DuPage River, which is a source of recreation for many during the summer months. People enjoy rafting, kayaking, and fishing on the river, as well as the use of our numerous parks. Shorewood is a community that still has that “small-town” feel, which makes it a desirable place to call home. The Village has many events throughout the year which encompasses a variety of activities for everyone. In the summer months, we host a concert series and a movie series that families of all ages enjoy. Our annual Crossroads Fest takes place in August and always draws in a large crowd from Shorewood, and neighboring

communities, alike. The second half of the year we host our Octoberfest, which is a huge hit. For the first time ever, Shorewood will be hosting a Holiday Market in December. This event will include food, drinks, craft vendors, and maybe even a visit from Santa, himself. Again, this is an event for all ages and sure to get everyone into the holiday spirit. Shorewood is a host to businesses, big and small, and we have room for many more. Feel free to come see what we have to offer, and I’m sure you’ll love it as much as we do! HISTORY

y historical accounts, Plainfield is known not only as the oldest community in Will County, originating as a haven from a swamp-filled city of Chicago. The village also is known for overcoming adversity 160 years later as the community gathered together to rebuild after a natural disaster, tripling its population in a mere 10 years. Originally known as Walker’s Grove (named after Jesse and James Walker), the village was inhabited by the Potawatomi at the time and incorporated in 1834. It now lies in both Will and Kendall counties. Early industries in 1834, according to village history, included a cheese factory, grist mill, tile factory, wagon manufacturing facility (the John Bill Wagon Shop at 511 Des Plaines), and the Dillman foundry at the corner of Route 30 and Route 59. In 1904, Plainfield became home to a 20acre camping resort called Electric Park, which boasted cabins, a large auditorium, a dance pavilion, restaurant and bowling alley, as well as swimming and boating along the banks of the DuPage River and a baseball diamond with an enclosed grandstand and horse driving track.

On Aug. 28, 1990, a horrific tornado struck Plainfield, resulting in the loss of 29 lives and hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. At the time, the population was around 4,500. Citizens rallied and rebuilt, and today Plainfield has grown exponentially to nearly 44,000. The adjacent village of Shorewood had its roots firmly planted as a vacation destination, starting out as a summer resort filled with cottages for vacationers from Chicago and Joliet. It wasn’t always called Shorewood – originally the village was known as Troy, located in Troy Township in DuPage County. The resort idea came from an industrious Albert H. Bruning, who purchased farmland from the Meyer family in 1926 and subdivided the land, selling small lots along the DuPage River. Every summer the Shorewood Beach Improvement Association would dam the river and put rafts out for swimming and diving. During the 1940s, people began to live in the cottages year-round and eventually sought incorporation as a village. Shorewood was incorporated on November 27, 1957, with a population of 358. Today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population is estimated at more than 17,000.

Plainfield Fun Facts l Plainfield (along with several other cities) lays claim to being the home of the first ice cream sundae. A Plainfield druggist named Sonntag created the treat by topping ice cream with syrup and naming it sonntag after himself. Sontagg means Sunday in German. l One of Plainfield’s nicknames is “The Mother of Chicago” because Chicago depended on the settlement for mail and supplies. l The Plainfield Library District was founded in 1925. l Plainfield College was established in 1861.

Shorewood Fun Facts l Troy history mentions the construction of a sawmill by Jedidiah Wooley, a grist mill by William Grinton, a McGee knitting mill, and the McEvoy sheep farms. l The reason the village was incorporated as Shorewood instead of Troy, was that there was already a town in Illinois by the name of Troy. l The tiny Troy population couldn’t raise enough money for an incorporation vote, so residents Edwin McHugh and Paul Puhl stepped up to the plate to supply the rest of the funds.

Kendall Area Transit provides curb-to-curb and door-to-door services for Kendall County residents. This is a general public transportation service with a priority for the disabled and seniors. Bus services are available 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (except holidays). PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP SENIOR SHUTTLE SERVICE Plainfield Township offers senior township residents bus service to run errands to local stores, hair appointments, activities, banks, and doctor appointments. Shuttle service hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is for township residents only and registration includes a simple passenger form. WHEATLAND TOWNSHIP RIDE DUPAGE PROGRAM The Ride DuPage program, a service providing valuable paratransit options for seniors and people with disabilities, has expanded to Wheatland Township. Operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with both bus and taxi service, Ride DuPage specializes in reduced fares and door-to-door service for seniors and people with disabilities. t’s hard to predict when things will be truly “normal” again, but even in the uncertain times, local shops are forging ahead in order to keep their businesses open and to preserve the community feel of Plainfield and Shorewood. “We’ve had some businesses that have had to close their doors for one reason or another,” says Tasha Marsaglia, Executive Director of the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce. “But we’ve also seen some newer businesses come out and open after they used the time they had during COVID to focus on what they really wanted to do.” Things have also been changing for the chamber itself. As of April 2021, the Plainfield and Shorewood Chamber of Commerces merged after the Shorewood president retired. With the merger, the Plainfield Chamber added 120 more businesses from the Shorewood Chamber, totaling 713 as of the end of August. “We’re gaining new members each month from both communities,” Marsaglia says, noting that they’re regularly hosting ribbon-cutting events. Marsaglia, who lives in Plainfield, lived in Shorewood when she started working with the Plainfield Chamber almost nine years ago and is intimately familiar with both communities. “We’re really excited about the growth and how we’re continuing to see new businesses open.” While things aren’t completely back to “normal,” shops are open and many businesses are working hard to get back on their feet after shutdowns over the last year. When the initial shutdown happened in March of 2020, ASK Boutique in Shorewood, which specializes in prom, homecoming and formal dresses, had just gotten their final shipment of prom dresses in.

“We pay for all of our inventory up front, and with no weddings, no galas and no high school dances, it was tough,” says co-owner Karen Drew, noting that they started to see things turn around in March of 2021. “It definitely wasn’t as good as prom season normally is, but it was something,” says co-owner Sarah DiGiovine. “We started getting really busy in July and it’s still going, so we’re finally able to take a deep breath. I think everyone is excited to start going to things again now that events are taking place.” Prom and homecoming aren’t the only events happening, either. One way that the chamber plans on promoting businesses this year is through the return of in-person events. In September, the chamber held the Harvest 5k Run/Walk with approximately 700 people, which is less than its typical 1,000 participants. “It’s good to be getting people back in the groove,” Marsaglia says. “Me personally as well! With all this time off, whether it be kids sports or events, all of that is back again.” October’s action includes the Halloween Spooktacular event with trick-or-treating at local businesses and on November 27, the community will celebrate shopping local on Small Business Saturday. The holiday Let It Glow light competition will run throughout December for both Plainfield and Shorewood. “Local businesses tend to give back to the community,” Drew says, adding that both she and DiGiovine live on the same street in Shorewood. “We are giving donations for raffle baskets for fundraisers, getting involved at Trunk or Treat, parades, or even Shorewood HUGS. “You’re not going to get that from the places you buy online.”

he Savarino Pizza name may be new, but its pizza, broasted chicken, pasta and sandwiches have been popular for decades.

We’re very involved in the community.” Savarino Pizza was unable to host its annual coat drive for the winter season last year due to the pandemic, but once again it is partnering with the Knights of Columbus this year to collect and distribute free coats for children and adults in need. “It was a shame we weren’t able to do it last year because we pride ourselves on doing a very large coat drive for the Christmas season,“ Savarino said. “Someone brings in a coat and we give them a large cheese pizza for free, which has been awesome. I think the last time we did it, we collected 400 jackets that we were able to give away for the Knights of Columbus’ homeless and whoever else was in need.” During Shorewood Fest, Savarino Pizza donated 25 pizzas to those with special needs. “We love doing that kind of stuff,” Savarino said. And they love to make pizza and more, and would love to cater your next party or meeting or whatever event it may be where you want the food to be a hit. “Catering is a large part of our business with the party trays of homemade beef and sausage,” Savarino said. “It’s starting to pick backup on that front again, which is great to see.”

At Khaos Brewcade & Kitchen, patrons enjoy unique dining experiences thanks to the delicious food on an evolving menu that sure beats those dots that Pac-Man lives on. Darts, skee ball, pinball and classic arcade games draw people of all ages to reminisce about days gone when you went to the arcade and met with friends to socialize and have a good time while playing the latest new games. love our beers, and many come in for the beer and then kind of venture out to the games, and others come for the food and stick around for the games.” Khaos serves up an equally strong food menu, which features great burgers as well as sandwiches, tacos, pizzas, salads, wings and much more all prepared by a fun, creative staff. “We’re a unique, full service restaurant that takes pride in the culinary aspects of all our concepts,” Knowles said. “We love food, and we love to get creative. We’re not culinary geniuses; we’re rebels. We do cool, fun stuff.” That fun stuff includes items such as the walking taco, which features a bag of Fritos or Doritos loaded with seasoned ground beef, frijoles con queso, lettuce, tomato, pickled jalapenos and lime crema. Other great menu items include Khaos’ take on the

McRib, the Fireclucker chicken sandwich and the Brisket Mac N’ Cheese, which is smoked brisket with a creamy cheese sauce, roasted red peppers and beer-braised onions topped with crispy onions. Jonesin’ for a burger? You can’t go wrong at Khaos. How’s The Unholy Gooey sound? It’s a double smashed patty with spicy pork and cherry peppers smothered with frijoles queso. “We’re fun here,” Knowles said.
