One California family is completing its goal of visiting every single In-N-Out location within one year.

Sam Vonderheide and his two kids Emery, 12, and Berkeley, 10, started this adventure on July 7th.

To kick it off, the family visited 185 locations in just 15 days.

Vonderheide And his kids have traveled about 13,500 miles so far and the family plans to visit eight central valley locations this coming weekend.

"My son prides himself that this was his idea," said Vonderheide.

Berkeley came up with the idea after most of their summer plans got cancelled due to the pandemic.

"I looked it up and it was like, there’s almost 360 of them and I thought, wow that’s more than I thought and then I was like, there’s 40 in Texas?," said Vonderheide, "There’s like over 30 in Arizona and a dozen in Utah, I mean, I was like well this is going to be a much bigger challenge than I even thought it was."

So far, the family has visited 316 of the 363 locations.

"Just to have fun and find something to be happy and excited about in this year that’s been really hard in a lot of ways," said Vonderheide, "And so that’s what this was for us and I feel like I’ve seen a lot of people get happy about what we’re doing, which makes me feel good."

The family now has over 7,000 people following their adventure on Instagram and they’ve got plenty of schwag to show for it.

"Like a beach umbrella, like a hammock, cookie jars," said Vonderheide, "One store gave us an actual tile with a palm tree on it."

They always buy at least one thing from each location and they’ve saved all the receipts.

"We kind of have made it a goal to try as many of the different secret menu items as possible," said Vonderheide, "One time we ordered all the different levels of the way you can have your french fries cooked because that’s a secret menu thing, there’s seven ways."

Their love for In-N-Out began with Sam's grandparents who lived near the first ever In-N-Out in Baldwin Park, which opened in 1948.

"I like to say my kids are fourth generation In-N-Out lovers," said Vonderheide.

According to Vonderheide, the kids haven’t gotten sick of it.

"I guarantee tonight if I ask them what they want, 50-50 chance they might say let’s go get In-N-Out," said Vonderheide.

The fast food chain has opened up a few more locations since the family has started this challenge, and Vonderheide said the family is eager to check those new locations off their list as well.
