“Ruggedized tablet PCs let customers take
durability a step further. Itronix, a General
Dynamics company, introduced its current
ruggedized tablet, the Duo-Touch, a year ago.
The slate-style tablet is designed to withstand
the “type of use a field worker puts a device
through,” said Tim Talda, director of product
line management for tablets and handhelds at
Itronix.
The Duo-Touch meets the military’s Mil-Std
810F for repeated three-foot drops, blowing
rain/water resistance and vibration, according
to Itronix. It also resists dusts in accordance
with Ingress Protection rating 54, an
international standard.”
“Satellite-based wireless information
technology has become a keystone of
future military operations envisioned
by the United States and many allies.
It requires portable terminals that units in
the field can use to access high data
volumes, often from a foxhole or the
back seat of a Humvee.
The GoBook has a small footprint under
1 square foot and meets MIL STD 810F
standards for the ability to be dropped,
exposed to dust and dunked in a waterbleach
solution. The screen is coated for
extra glare reduction and the backlit
keyboard allows operations in low light. “
“A bit more rugged?” you say. Sounds
vague, and it is. No clear standard has
been developed to let consumers know
what semi-rugged really means. We have
even seen companies do the bare
minimum, such as shock-mounting the
hard drive in foam, and then call the
result a semi-rugged notebook.
But the GCN Lab recently took a look at
the new Itronix VR-1, which is something
different: a semi-rugged notebook
with the specs to back up that
ambiguous label.
"We're now the largest 'United
States based' manufacturer of
rugged mobile wireless
notebook solutions and we
have tremendous momentum
into the DoD market space. A
lot of the reason for that has
been a product that holds up
very well - better than the other
commercial off the shelf
solutions - in sand, dust, driving,
rain, and holding up to being
dropped.”
“Both the notebook and the
exceed US military
dropping the notebook 26
temperatures ranging from -
“…When you point out that regular
systems in the field can break two or three
times a year, and that the replacements
push the total cost above that of a rugged
system, and that the users can’t do their
job when the computer breaks, that’s
when rugged starts to make sense.”
Hardened Laptops: A New Meaning
of 'Extreme'
By Rob Enderle
“In one grueling test done by the
Air Force…only the Itronix box
survived. They put laptops on
the tail of an F-16 aircraft and
dropped them to the tarmac.
After that, a 230-pound airman
stood on top of the systems for a
bit. And those were the easy
tests.”
